Mementos

I’m excited to announce that a new CD recording of Conjecture for clarinet and orchestra was released in August. Navona Records’ CD Mementos features four new orchestral works by living composers. Conjecture was recorded by the Slovak National Philharmonic Orchestra with Richard Stoltzman as soloist, conducted by Kirk Trevor. Visit the new recordings page for more information.

Currently, I’m working on a new piece for unaccompanied viola solo, and a set of Erie Canal folk songs for string quartet. The viola solo is going to be in the 7-9 minute range. Both works should be available by the end of November.

I am also working on putting together a major new project for the amazing Concord Ensemble. I’m partnering with historian Jeff Reznick, who is publishing a new book called John Galsworthy and Disabled Soldiers of the Great War (available for preorder from Amazon.com), published by the University of Manchester Press.

Dr. Reznick’s book looks at Galsworthy’s advocacy for wounded soldiers during World War I, and combines the author's writings on the subject with his own fascinating personal story during the same time. A nation’s responsibility to care for its wounded soliders has not changed since then, and this subject has much to tell us today. I will be writing a piece that both sets excerpts of Galsworthy’s work, while also incorporating elements from Dr. Reznick’s research into the author’s life. The piece is provisionally titled The Sacred Work after one of Galsworthy’s essays. The Sacred Work is currently seeking a commissioner. More details on that are available by contacting me at jason@jasonbarabba.com. This will be a very exciting project, and I am looking forward to getting started.

The score to This Friday Afternoon will appear in the premiere issue of Microfilme, a microfilm-only arts journal, later this year. The score will appear in this unusual format, alongside the original poem by Alan Felsenthal.

Check out the works page for a complete list of my available catalog. Many scores are available in .pdf form, or you can contact me for a free perusal copy via the request form provided, or by emailing me directly.

I am always excited to discuss new projects or commissions, old projects and performances, or anything that’s on your mind. Thanks!
